The Wilton High boys skiing team finished off a memorable season on Wednesday by winning the Class S title at the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League state championships at Mt. Southington.

The Warriors, who were fourth overall, beat Class S runner-up Daniel Hand by about five seconds.

“An undefeated season, conference champions and a fourth-place finish at states — I’d say that’s something worth celebrating,” said boys team coach Mike Kaulins. “We had skiers skiing their personal best, showing incredible improvement and wonderful teamwork and sportsmanship.”

Fairfield Prep was the Class L and overall state champ with a team time of 259.12, followed by Fairfield (263.53), Ridgefield (264.54), Wilton (264.67) and Staples (265.52).

Freshman Ryan Van Heyst led the way for Wilton, finishing 14th overall out of field of 127 skiers with a combined time (two runs) of 43.21.

Christian Theoharides was close behind in 18th place (43.44), followed by Dom Polito (33rd, 44.24), Michael Hueglin (35th, 44.4), Patrick Verrilli (36th, 44.43), August Theoharides (48th, 44.95), Scott Verrilli (55th, 45.26), Phil Klinga (58th, 45.42), John Fortuna (62nd, 45.62) and Matt Arrix (85th, 47.65)

The Warriors finished third in Class S this season to earn the bronze medal.

Fairfield was the overall winner on Wednesday with a time of 276.6, while Weston (279.02) was second overall and first in Class S.

Kira Howard, a freshman, had a big performance for Wilton, placing second overall (out of 109 skiers) and first in Class S with a time of 44.09.

Julia Bonnist was the next Wilton finisher, taking 28th overall in 46.89. She was followed by Katie Reid (49th, 48.46), Emily O’Brien (52nd, 48.68), Hope Ullman (55th, 49.24), Alex Magnasson (76th, 51.1), Megan Kaeyer (78th, 51.36), Emily Welch (80th, 51.56), Chloe Elias (86th, 52.88) and Lexi Hine (91st, 53.97).

“My goal for the girls ski team this year was to make it to the states race. And not only did they qualify, they finished the season third in Class S, out of 11 teams — a great accomplishment,” said girls coach Bill Howard. “With all the improvement on the team throughout the season, next year should be great.”
