Students collect supplies for vets

Since the week before Christmas, Wilton High School has been collecting cleaning items for homeless and struggling veterans in Homes for the Brave programs through its annual Socks for Soldiers drive.

“Even though we are called Socks for Soldiers and most of our collections are just socks, this [drive] is a little different,” said Patrick Verrilli, a senior and one of the chairs of this year’s drive. “We are just collecting cleaning items for this specific collection.”

The drive will conclude at the end of this month, and there is a particular need for dish soap, laundry detergent, paper goods, household cleaners, shampoo and shaving cream. Donations may be dropped off outside Daniel Pompa’s room in the guidance hallway of Wilton High School.

Homes for the Brave is a Bridgeport-based nonprofit that provides housing, vocational training and life skills coaching to help individuals — most of whom are veterans — leave homelessness behind.

Individuals in Homes for the Brave’s Waldorf Permanent Supportive Housing and Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes programs will also benefit from the Socks for Soldiers campaign.

Waldorf Permanent Supportive Housing provides permanent supportive housing with case management services to formerly homeless male veterans and non-veterans.

The Female Soldiers program, housed at the Nicholas A. Madaras Home in Bridgeport, is Connecticut’s first and only community-based transitional home exclusively for homeless female veterans and their young children.
